How to Calculate Hourly Wage
Your hourly wage is the amount you earn per hour. To calculate your total earnings, multiply your hourly wage by the number of hours worked. For example, if you earn £15 per hour and work 8 hours, your daily wage is £120. Weekly wage: £15 × 8 × 5 = £600.
How to Calculate Daily Wage From an Hourly Rate
Multiply your hourly wage by the number of hours you work in a day. For £15/hour and 8 hours/day: £15 × 8 = £120 per day.
How to Calculate Weekly Wage
Multiply your daily wage by the number of days you work per week. £120 × 5 = £600 per week. Or multiply hourly wage × hours per day × days per week.
How to Calculate Yearly Wage From an Hourly Wage
Multiply your weekly wage by the number of weeks you work per year. £600 × 52 = £31,200 per year. Alternatively: hourly wage × hours per day × days per week × weeks per year.
How to Calculate an Hourly Wage From a Salary
To calculate your hourly wage from a salary, divide your total pay by the number of hours worked. For a £35,000 annual salary with 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, your hourly wage is £35,000 ÷ 2,080 = £16.83.
Hourly Wage and Overtime
Overtime is paid at a higher rate (e.g., 1.5× or 2× your regular wage). If you work 5 overtime hours per week at 1.5×, your overtime pay is £15 × 1.5 × 5 × 52 = £5,850 per year. Your total annual gross wage becomes £31,200 + £5,850 = £37,050.
Gross Wage vs Take-Home Wage
Gross wage is your pay before deductions. Take-home wage (net wage) is what you receive after Income Tax, National Insurance, pension and other deductions. The difference can be significant, especially as your earnings increase.
How Income Tax Affects Hourly Earnings
Income Tax is calculated on your total annual earnings. For 2026/27, the Personal Allowance is £12,570. Earnings above this are taxed at 20% (basic rate), 40% (higher rate) or 45% (additional rate). Scotland has different bands. The calculator applies the correct rates based on your selected region.
How National Insurance Affects Take-Home Wage
Employee Class 1 National Insurance for 2026/27: 0% below £242/week, 8% between £242 and £967/week, and 2% above £967/week. This is deducted from your gross wage.
Hourly Wage Calculation Example
Example: Hourly wage £15, 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, 52 weeks/year. Weekly wage = £600. Annual gross wage = £31,200. With 5 overtime hours/week at 1.5×, overtime pay = £5,850, total gross = £37,050. After Income Tax (£4,740) and NI (£2,429), net annual wage = £29,881. Net hourly wage ≈ £12.24.
Hourly Wage and Different Working Schedules
Part-time workers, shift workers and freelancers often have varying schedules. This calculator lets you adjust hours per day, days per week and weeks per year to match your specific situation, giving you an accurate picture of your earnings.
