What Are UK Tax Brackets?
UK Income Tax is calculated using a system of tax brackets (or bands). Each bracket has a different tax rate. Your income is taxed progressively — the first portion is tax-free, the next portion is taxed at the basic rate, then higher rate, and so on.
UK Tax Brackets (2025/26)
| Band | England / Wales / NI | Scotland |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Allowance | 0% up to £12,570 | 0% up to £12,570 |
| Starter Rate | N/A | 19% £12,571-£14,802 |
| Basic Rate | 20% £12,571-£37,700 | 20% £14,803-£26,998 |
| Intermediate Rate | N/A | 21% £26,999-£43,732 |
| Higher Rate | 40% £37,701-£125,140 | 42% £43,733-£125,140 |
| Additional / Top Rate | 45% over £125,140 | 48% over £125,140 |
Marginal vs Effective Tax Rate
Marginal tax rate is the rate you pay on your next £1 of income. It is your highest tax bracket. Effective tax rate is the average rate you pay across all your income. This calculator shows both.
Tax Bracket Example
Example: Annual income of £45,000 (England/Wales, 2025/26)
- Personal Allowance: £12,570 → 0%
- Basic Rate: £25,130 × 20% = £5,026
- Higher Rate: £7,300 × 40% = £2,920
- Marginal Rate: 40% (Higher Rate)
- Effective Rate: 17.7%
- Total Tax: £7,946
How Tax Codes Affect Your Bracket
Your tax code determines your Personal Allowance. The standard code 1257L means you get the full £12,570 Personal Allowance. A different code may increase or decrease your tax-free amount, which affects your bracket position.
Scotland vs England Tax Brackets
Scottish Income Tax rates and bands are different from the rest of the UK. Scotland has five tax bands (Starter, Basic, Intermediate, Higher, Top) compared to England/Wales which have three bands (Basic, Higher, Additional).
Common Tax Bracket Misconceptions
- Myth: "If I earn £40,000, all my income is taxed at 40%."
- Fact: Only income above £37,700 is taxed at 40%. The rest is taxed at lower rates.
- Myth: "I shouldn't earn more because I'll pay more tax."
- Fact: You only pay higher tax on the portion above the threshold. You still earn more overall.
Important: This calculator provides estimates only. Your actual tax bracket may differ based on your personal circumstances. Always check with HMRC or a tax professional.
